• All versions of the new model use the same 74.7 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.
  • Subaru has built the Uncharted around Toyota’s e-TNGA platform.
  • Sales of the new Uncharted will start in the US from early next year.

It’s not often that Subaru releases an all-new model line in the United States, but that’s exactly what it has done with this: the new Subaru Uncharted. As we had expected, it shares its underpinnings and many parts with the new electric Toyota C-HR and promises slightly more rugged appeal than the Solterra in a smaller package.

Underpinning the Uncharted is Toyota’s familiar e-TNGA platform, and all versions use a 74.7 kWh lithium-ion battery. Subaru has confirmed three versions for the American market, dubbed the Premium FWD, Sport, and GT. That entry-level model is interesting as it’s Subaru’s first front-wheel drive vehicle for decades. Meanwhile, both the Sport and GT use the company’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system with X-Mode.

The front-wheel drive model will pack 221 hp and, according to Subaru, should be able to travel over 300 miles (492 km) on a charge. Interestingly, the carmaker says it will only be sold in “limited quantities,” so it’s unlikely to be a member of the Uncharted family for long. Considering the EV’s rugged appeal, it’s likely that most buyers will prefer the all-wheel drive Sport and GT models anyway.

Subaru’s New Uncharted Is Like An All-Electric Crosstrek

These two versions pack 338 hp and have an estimated range of up to 290 miles. According to the brand, the Uncharted offers “impressive straight-line stability, handling, and grip on loose surfaces such as gravel, dirt, or snow.” Fittingly, it looks a little more trail-ready than the C-HR, sporting more rugged front and rear bumpers, as well as new headlights and taillights. Shoppers will be able to order the Uncharted with either 18- or 20-inch wheels. There are also low-profile roof rails.
